Blogging

Sara Juhee's been asleep for nearly two hours. To me, that translates as two hours of potential sleep time that I've missed out on. It's harder here than in the US to get sleep other than at night time because the sliding doors are so thin I can still hear everything even if Peter takes her to the other room so I can't sleep anyway. :(

To sleep or to blog? That is the question!

Sleep will come soon, now is not the time for sleep. :)

I'm going to try to update our blog with at least one short entry at least every other day. There's so much I want to write about!!!

The first three entries on this blog have been the update emails that we've sent out to our OHayo OHsaka (English version - as opposed to the Korean translation) Google group. We need to send out the emails in a slightly cryptic format as they're sent to friends living in countries where emails with certain religious terminology can draw unwanted attention to them so we try to keep the emails somewhat "safe", yet understandable. Not all of those receiving our email updates are Christian, or familiar with Christian jargon, so we try to remain mindful of this too. I did think about taking out all of the funny symbols and abbreviations on the blog but I decided against it in the end. I will though if it would help so let me know.

Exciting times and lots to share so keep coming back (or if you're tech-savvy, add our blog to your RSS-feeds)!

Blessings,
Jenny :)

Oct 30 - We're in Japan!

Dear friends and family,

Korea - Part 1. We spent 5 days from Oct. 22-27th recovering from jetlag in the luxury of Jenny's grandmother's apartment in Sanbon (just south of Seoul), South Korea. We had the best of homemade Korean food, bought a big box of diapers, went "hiking" up the small mountain just a 5 minute walk away, brought back a big container of water from the natural springs, and were able to attend family w*rsh*p with Jenny's aunts and uncles (mother’s side) on Sunday evening too.

His Timing. On Friday Oct. 24th, we were amazed again at how He brings people together in His d*v*ne timing. Jenny's aunt (1st Chr*st*@n in her family) arranged a meeting between us and the head of WEC in Korea and his wife. It was a time of catching-up for me (Jenny) too as I went to elementary school with their daughters during their one year sabbatical in Korea (they were m*ss**nar*es in Gambia) 15-16 years ago. We were able to discuss with them the option of joining WEC, and spent a long time discussing with one of their Japan m*ss**nar*es (currently on sabbatical in Seoul) what life in Japan and working with WEC would be like. That particular day, the staff were being treated to a buffet lunch and we were asked to join. =) After lunch, Jenny's aunt took us to Onnuri, one of the biggest ch*rch*s in Korea, as they were holding a big international conference from Thursday to Saturday. Through her contacts, Jenny's aunt was able to arrange a meeting for us with the Japanese p@st*r and his Korean wife currently serving at Onnuri Yokohama who were attending the conference. It was great to be able to hear about Japan, the Japanese people, the concerns, and the sp*r*tu*l state of Japan from a Japanese person – and a p@st*r nonetheless! – living in Japan. After the meeting, Jenny's aunt had to go to her church so we ended up taking the subway back, and Sara Juhee had her first ever Korean subway experience. It was jam packed because it was rush hour, but everyone was very mindful of her (some would say “stop pushing there’s a baby here!”) and she in turn was busy entertaining those around her. =) In order for these meetings to take place, the WEC and Onnuri people had to be in Seoul at the same time as us and the fact that they were all available at different times on that same day made it perfect for us to use that one day for both meetings. Jenny's aunt also is not usually available on Fridays, but due to a special event, her usual Friday meeting was canceled and so she was able to drive us around everywhere. How perfect!!!

We're in Japan! We arrived in Osaka, Japan on Monday, October 27th. We rented a small apartment for the 4 weeks right next to Osakako subway station in the Tempozan area, right next to the harbor. Our property manager’s been really helpful, and with his help we were able to visit a big marketplace on our 2nd day. We went to buy essential groceries so we can eat at home as much as possible instead of eating out to try to save some money. We’re experiencing first hand how expensive everything is in Japan… sliced bread about ¼ the size of a regular loaf seems to be sold mostly in packets of six (sometimes four) very thick slices and costs over 1 USD! After comparing prices at various shops, we ended up buying the cheapest sack of 5kg which cost us 16 USD! We’re used to paying about 10 USD for 10 kg sacks of rice so it was a bit of a shock to say the least…

Looking Ahead. From tomorrow (Friday, Oct 31st), but more in earnest from next week, we’re hoping to meet people who we know will play a very important role in shaping our future in Japan. Not all of the dates and times have been set yet, but we’re hoping to meet individuals from the agencies Asian Access, Pioneers, and WEC next week as well as friends of friends and possible employers. Please pr@y for us and these meetings as we seek His way and His wisdom.

OHayo OHsaka Blog (http://ohayo-ohsaka.blogspot.com/). We have a lot more we want to tell you about but we don’t want to make the update emails any longer than they already are, so we’ve started a blog. So far, it’s just what we’ve sent out in our emails, but we’ll be updating it with short blogs as often as possible so “watch this space”! =)

Contacting Us. We do have internet access from our apartment but we’re sharing one laptop during the short times that we’re at home so our email’s a bit limited, but email or phone (+81-90-6098-7361) are the best ways to contact us.

Pr@yr Points.
• For the meetings that He’s provided – for wisdom, etc…
• Painless, fever-less, crankiness-less teething! Sara Juhee’s teething like there’s no tomorrow! She cut her 6th tooth the day we left San Jose (last Tuesday), her 7th tooth last Friday, and her 8th tooth on the day we arrived in Osaka (Monday). She’s had a couple of mild fevers and has been cranky at times but has thankfully been her usual good-humored happy self.
• No mosquito bites! Sara Juhee got two our last night in Korea and Peter got two our first day in Osaka. No more please!
• Rest and SLEEP for Jenny. To ease jetlag and being in a new environment, we’ve been nursing Sara Juhee when she wakes up at night so Jenny’s still nursing her 5-7 times in a 24-hour period. Jenny’s not getting a whole lot of sleep at night and so is finding the extra amount of activity tiring, especially with a lot of the energy and nutrition from her decreased amount of food intake going to baby.

Thank You. To you, as always, and also to our G- for blessing us with you, your prayers, for providing for us in everyway (and for no travel sickness – yay!). =)

Pr@yrfully yours,
Peter, Yeonsook Jenny, and Sara Juhee Oh

Oct 20 - We're on our way!

Dear friends and family,

We're finally going! So exciting, so scary, so awesome!!!

We'll be in Korea from Oct 22 - 27 & Nov 24 - Dec 2, and in Japan from Oct 27 - Nov 24.

Please pr- for...

1. Divine appointments as we meet people from two different missions agencies that are already out there and possible job / franchise opportunities. We'll need wisdom in discerning the agency and the job / business that He wants us to do and not just choose the option most convenient for us.
2. Safe, cost-effective and time-efficient travel as Sara Juhee's never flown anywhere before and Jenny has really bad travel sickness (car, bus, plane, train, boat...) so please pr- for our health too as Peter will have to be extra strong during this time. Also, the people that we need to meet are not all local to Osaka so we'll need to visit Hiroshima and Kobe at the least. Only G knows which other cities He'll lead us to while we're there! We'll be doing a lot of traveling in a country we've never been to with a 10 month old baby so we need lots of wisdom in discerning the best ways of getting everywhere we need to go. We're praying that the schedules of everyone we need to meet might all line up so that we can purchase a 7-day rail pass and meet all of the non-Osaka people during those 7 days - that'd be a miracle!

Thank you so much to all of you who have given us advice on travelling with a baby, travelling in Japan, where to stay in Korea and/or Japan, contacts of friends (of friends) in Japan, research material (e.g. DVDs), and most of all for your loving, caring, moral, spiritual, financial, pr-erful support.

Grace and Peace,
Peter, Yeonsook Jenny & Sara Juhee Oh

Oct 2 - Update of our trip to OHsaka

Dear friends and family,

We're in the midst of preparing to go to Japan, and we wanted to update you on some of the highlights of our preparation.

At the end of August, Peter finished his role working with the Youth. It was very bitter sweet knowing that we will be leaving our beloved students to follow His leading to a new life in a distant country. After a much needed break, we began to prepare in earnest for our initial trip to Japan. Our original plan was to leave the US on September 30th and return mid-November, but we’re still here! =) G- had other plans for us, and through us postponing our trip for a couple of weeks, He has shown us once again that He is perfect and His timing is perfect. You see, unbeknownst to us at the time, two big family gatherings were being planned for each side of Jenny's family at the end of November. Attending these two events will allow us to meet both sides of Jenny’s family in two gatherings instead of having to arrange seven separate meetings with family members, saving everyone a lot of time and energy! How perfect! Leaving later also means that the flights are cheaper, we'll have time to recover from jetlag in Seoul before going to Osaka, Sara Juhee can eat a greater variety of food and it doesn’t have to be as soft, and we just found out today (Oct 2nd) that there's an important meeting next week that would be very beneficial for us to attend in terms of a possible future business venture in Japan!

The new schedule is to leave the US on Tuesday, October 21st, arriving in Seoul October 22nd, and then returning to the US on Tuesday, December 2nd. During this 6-week period, we’ll be spending 4 weeks in Osaka, Japan, from Monday, October 26th – November 24th. Through friends and the internet, we were able to find affordable small apartment-type accommodation for our stays which will allow us to not burden relatives in Seoul, allow us to have alone-family time in the evenings, Sara Juhee will have room to crawl around and we’ll have a kitchen, washing machine, etc allowing us to feel more at home than if we were to stay at a hotel. We still don’t know what we’re going to do and who we’re going to meet while we’re in Osaka, but we know that He will send us the right people at the right time in the right situation to enable us to find out what job He wants us to have while we’re there, the right documents in order to obtain our visas upon our return to the US, and the perfect place for us to live in when we return to Osaka in early 2009.

After our initial trip, we'll have a better idea of when we'll be returning to Japan for the long-term. We're currently planning our return for late January or early February, but we'll remain open to His timing. We'll have plenty to keep us busy, and we're hoping we enjoy every bit of it. When we return to the US in December, we’ll be busy preparing for Sara Juhee’s 1st birthday, Christmas, New Year’s celebrations but also for our move – visas, packing & shipping boxes, studying Japanese, learning more about the culture, people…

There are still loose ends that we need to tie up here before we can go on our initial trip, and we also have lots of arrangements to make for while we’re in Seoul and Osaka.

One “loose end” that is very close to being tied is our condo in Sunnyvale. Thanks to a referral from friends, we’ve now hired a property manager who specializes in rentals and we have every confidence that He will send the right tenants through her in the very near future.

It’s the beginning of a new life for us and we’re very excited! We’re so grateful for your pr-er, your advice, your contacts and your support.

We have so many pr-er requests... Please pr- for us to remain humble, open and obedient to His leading, that His will be done – even if it means taking a leap of faith! As for some specific pr-er topics, please pr- for our condo to be rented out quickly to the right tenants, for a safe and pleasant journey (especially because Jenny has a bad case of motion sickness), for Him to provide divine appointments with the people He wants us to meet, for Him to give us wisdom in speech, and for Him to provide a means for us to have a long-term visa for when we return in January.

We’d love to meet up and tell you more so let us know if you’re available sometime!

Grace and Peace,
Peter, Yeonsook Jenny, and Sara Juhee Oh
