From April, the Murrays will be leading a monthly practically-free Kids' English Club outreach for elementary school kids at both churches, one Saturday each per month. They've already purchased the curriculum and we have the dates. Susan worked really hard to come up with a really cute logo (pic) last month and we started the process of looking into quotes to get t-shirts printed for the kids. She even started designing postcards to be handed out to advertise the outreach. Everything was going so well! :)
But then... Susan brought it to church on Sunday to ask the kids and members of the church (including a school teacher) what they thought of the logo. Well, in short, they didn't like it! One adult couldn't even tell that it was a turtle! Apparently turtles aren't very "in" in Japan. Susan asked the kids what animals they do like, and the list included dogs, cats, bears and pandas. Apparently a panda at a zoo somewhere in Japan gave birth recently so pandas became really popular. :)
What is cute and immediately identifiable in our "western" eyes, apparently is not necessarily so in the eyes of our friends here. So no colorful cute smart-looking turtle with glasses for us...
As discouraging as it was for all of us, especially Susan, we were all grateful that God intervened when He did and prompted Susan to ask around at church that Sunday, right before we were about to commit to printing 110 t-shirts. Phew!
Brian Tom (link), a teammate down in Fukuoka who is an awesome, talented graphic designer and teaches English to kids as part of his ministry here, has agreed to help us out - phew!
Thank you God for intervening and thank you God for providing! Can't wait to see Brian's design. :)
